Libri per i Cani è un ente benefico per il benessere degli animali che promuove la consapevolezza del benessere degli animali nella regione storica dell’Umbria, nell’Italia centrale. Siamo un gruppo di volontari amanti degli animali con idee simili, con l’unico obiettivo di alleviare la sofferenza degli animali abbandonati contribuendo al loro rifugio sicuro, alla loro nutrizione e alle loro cure mediche.
Books for Dogs is an animal welfare charity promoting awareness for the well-being of animals in the historical region of Umbria in central Italy. We are a group of like-minded animal-loving volunteers with the sole goal to alleviate the suffering of abandoned animals by contributing to their safe haven, nutrition and medication.
Il nostro negozio di Umbertide offre un’ampia gamma di libri di buona qualità, sia di narrativa che di saggistica, oltre a una sezione per bambini e titoli italiani, insieme a DVD, un’area di alta moda e vari articoli per la casa. Accettiamo donazioni presso il negozio o direttamente a uno dei nostri volontari. Gestiamo anche organizziamo vari eventi durante l’anno per raccogliere fondi per supportare i rifugi per animali locali (canili) per acquistare attrezzature, apportare miglioramenti alle strutture e fornire servizi e forniture mediche. Periodicamente, organizziamo campagne specifiche come programmi di sterilizzazione e microchip/registrazione in collaborazione con veterinari e autorità locali.
Our shop in Umbertide has a wide range of good quality books, both fiction and non-fiction, plus a children’s section and Italian titles, along with DVDs, a high-end fashion rail and various household items. We welcome donations either at the shop or directly to one of our volunteers. We also organise various events throughout the year to raise funds to support local animal shelters (canili) to buy equipment, make improvements to facilities and provide medical services and supplies. Periodically, we organise specific campaigns such as sterilisation programmes and microchipping/registration in collaboration with local vets and authorities.

La nostra rete di volontari e sostenitori aiuta a mantenere i canili attraverso vari lavori di costruzione e riparazione, sessioni di toelettatura e passeggiate e facilitazione del processo di adozione con potenziali adottanti.
Our network of volunteers and supporters help maintain the canili through various building and repair works, grooming and walking sessions, and facilitation of the rehoming process with potential adopters.
Diffondendo la consapevolezza nella comunità locale, miriamo a ridurre i tassi di abbandono, maltrattamento e avvelenamento e a trovare case permanenti per i migliori amici dell’uomo.
By spreading awareness in the local community, we aim to reduce rates of abandonment, maltreatment and poisoning, and find permanent homes for man’s best friends.

Le Nostre Radici Our Roots
Il giorno di Natale del 2007, Penelope (Penny) Radford e Teana Newman hanno trascorso la mattinata aiutando a sfamare 170 cani al rifugio per animali Lerchi, appena a nord di Città di Castello in Umbria. La mattina era fredda e umida e la lavatrice del rifugio si era rotta, lasciando la cuccia dei cani sporca, fradicia e inutilizzabile.
On Christmas Day in 2007, Penelope (Penny) Radford and Teana Newman spent the morning helping to feed 170 dogs at the Lerchi animal shelter, or canile, just north of Città di Castello in Umbria. The morning was cold and damp and the shelter’s washing machine had broken down leaving the dogs’ bedding soiled, sodden and unusable.
Sulla via del ritorno, Penny e Teana decisero di supportare lo staff permanente di Lerchi, che dimostrava un’enorme dedizione al benessere dei cani di cui si prendevano cura nonostante le risorse limitate. Decisero che il loro primo compito sarebbe stato raccogliere fondi per sostituire la lavatrice inutilizzata.
On the way home, Penny and Teana resolved to support the permanent staff at Lerchi, who showed huge dedication to the welfare of the dogs in their care despite limited resources. They decided their first task would be to raise money to replace the defunct washing machine.
Grazie alla generosità di amici e conoscenti e a uno sconto considerevole gentilmente offerto dal fornitore Formica di Umbertide, è stata installata una nuova lavatrice/asciugatrice in 10 giorni. Questo risultato iniziale ha stimolato la loro determinazione e ha stimolato l’immaginazione di molti altri a offrire volontariamente il loro tempo e a fare brainstorming di idee per la raccolta fondi. Il risultato è stata la nascita di Books for Dogs.
Through the generosity of friends and acquaintances, and a considerable discount kindly offered by supplier Formica in Umbertide, a new washer/drier was installed in 10 days. This initial achievement spurred their determination and stirred the imagination of many others to volunteer their time and brain storm fund-raising ideas with the result that Books for Dogs, or Libri per i Cani, was born.
Il 28 maggio 2008, Books for Dogs ha aperto una bancarella di libri di seconda mano in inglese durante il giorno del mercato nel centro di Umbertide. La bancarella è stata subito una calamita sociale che ha attratto un’ampia comunità di espatriati con una preoccupazione comune per il benessere degli animali. Con la crescita della popolarità di Books for Dogs, l’ente di beneficenza è stato in grado di estendere il supporto a diversi canili della zona. Da queste umili radici, Books for Dogs si è assicurata una sede permanente nel 2016.
On 28 May 2008, Books for Dogs opened a stall selling second-hand books in English on Market Day in the centre of Umbertide. The stall was an instant social magnet attracting a wide community of expatriates with a common concern over animal welfare. As Books for Dogs’ popularity grew, the charity was able to extend support to several canili in the area. From these humble grassroots, Books for Dogs secured permanent premises in 2016.
Oggi, il negozio vende abiti usati (inclusi occasionali tesori firmati) e vari articoli per la casa, oltre a libri e video in più lingue. Books for Dogs organizza anche “eventi speciali” come serate jazz, sfilate di moda, barbecue e tea party.
Today, the shop stocks pre-loved clothes, (including the occasional designer treasure) and various household items, as well as books and videos in multiple languages. Books for Dogs also arranges “special events” such as jazz evenings, fashion shows, BBQs and tea parties.

Sabrina joined our committee at the end of 2024 and was nominated Secretary to the ONLUS. Sabrina is a Umbertidian having also spent many years working in London.

President
Michael moved to Umbria in August 2017 after a 35-year career in international banking. He has five rescue cats. His previous voluntary activities included Treasurer of an independent swimming club in London, UK.

Treasurer
Nigel joined the committee in 2024. He is a retired business executive with extensive international experience.
Angela Nutt
Member
Angela moved to Italy 13 years ago after a 35 year career flying as a Concorde stewardess for British Airways. She has been involved with Books for Dogs almost from its inception to the present day helping vulnerable animals in need.

We welcomed Tita to the committee in April 2022 to help with all liason operations with our approved charities and local agencies. More recently in late 2024 she was voted into the post of Vice President.

Heather has lived in Italy since 2010, she loves books and cats, and has many years of Library experience. She is assisted by Nicole Redi for the non English section of our collection.
